The Netherlands ranks fourth in EU for digitalisation

The Netherlands has ranked 4th in the European Commission’s Digital Economy Society Index 2021.  The country held its 2020 position, behind Denmark, Finland and Sweden.

The DESI index tracks digital progress made in EU member states in measures including human capital, broadband connectivity, the integration of digital technologies by businesses and digital public services. Advances in digital progress can help businesses to gain a competitive advantage, improve their services and products, and more easily expand their markets.

Compared to other Europeans, the index found people in the Netherlands remain well above average in digital skills, and the number of trained ICT specialists is steadily increasing.

The report also found The Netherlands ranks:

  • 2nd for connectivity, with nearly all households covered by fixed networks capable of providing services of 30 Mbps (98%) and near-complete 4G coverage of households. It has the second highest 5G coverage of households at EU level (80%).
  • 5th for integration of digital technology. Compared with last year, the percentage of enterprises using big data and cloud technologies has slightly increased.
  • 8th for digital public services.
  • 3rd for digital skills.

Improvements lie within meeting demand for tech graduates and specialists to avoid shortages, bridging the gender gap, making more use of AI, and using tech to achieve sustainability ambitions. However the report acknowledged the adoption of the Dutch National Growth Fund, with €20 billion reserved for infrastructure, innovation, and R&D, including sizeable portions allocated to AI, health data infrastructure, and quantum technology.
