One of the best European cities for fintechs

Amsterdam has ranked fourth in Savills European Fintech Occupier Index 2021, jumping from 10th position in 2020.

The index ranks the most attractive European cities for fintech occupiers to locate. It looks at four main criteria: demographics, talent and innovation, affordability and business environment, and green finance. Green finance is an additional criteria this year, given the rising importance of environmental and social factors impacting the financial services industry.

  • Amsterdam jumped to 4th spot as it leads the way on green financing in Europe.
  • London topped the rankings, with Paris second and Berlin third.
  • The report praised the Netherlands for having an “attractive business environment” and predicted a “strong demographic growth in future years”.

Amsterdam-founded fintech pioneers Adyen and Mollie were singled out for their international growth. The Netherlands’ digitally savvy population also factored into the ranking, as fintech companies benefit from consumers who have most actively adopted online banking.

Amsterdam's fintech success stories

As well as being home to the Amsterdam Stock Exchange and headquarters of major Dutch banks, Amsterdam has established itself as a leading centre for fintech in recent years. Along with Mollie and Adyen, digital bank bunq is making waves worldwide, while international companies such as Modulr and Agicap have successfully expanded to the city.

The city’s innovative tech community, English-speaking talent pool, world-class financial infrastructure and open regulatory systems make it an attractive place for fintechs to build and scale.
