Imagr expands to Europe with an office in Amsterdam
New Zealand-based tech startup Imagr has recently opened a new marketing and sales headquarters in Amsterdam for its expansion into the European market.
Founded in 2015, Imagr harnesses AI-based technology to replace traditional barcode scanning. Advanced image recognition identifies items in stores and supermarkets and knows when products are added to or removed from a shopping cart. The system is white label, allowing retailers to own it, brand it and scale it themselves.
CEO William Chomley sees the potential for growth within the European market, especially following the pandemic: ’Europe and the UK both have highly competitive grocery markets where outlets need to differentiate themselves from the pack or face losing market share. Having boots on the ground is the best way for us to reach these potential customers and support demand.’
Imagr’s expansion to Amsterdam follows the finalisation of two deals with European retailers and the opening of their first store in Osaka, Japan earlier in 2021.
A fast-growing AI hub across sectors
In 2020 Amsterdam was named one of the most AI-ready cities in the world and the Dutch capital is fast becoming a leading hub for innovations in AI technology across various business sectors.
In the last month, the University of Amsterdam and Netherlands Cancer Institute opened the AI for Oncology Lab to develop AI algorithms that could improve cancer treatment. Microsoft chose Amsterdam for a new AI research lab, focused on molecular science and machine learning.
Publicly backed programmes such as AI Technology for People ensure that AI innovations are deployed in a responsible way that improves society.
