Pride at the beach: a new addition to a unique event

Unless you’ve been living in a cave, or perhaps spent the last few years navigating the Arctic Circle, it’s more than likely that you’ve heard all about Amsterdam’s iconic Pride celebrations. A week of glam parties, unique events and fascinating exhibitions all celebrating the LGBTI community, anyone who’s visited Amsterdam during Pride knows exactly why it is one of biggest and best celebrations of its kind in the world.

From the opening Pride Walk, which sees thousands of people make their way through the city to celebrate gay pride, to the numerous boats, floats and lavishly decorated barges that sail down the canals during the spectacular Canal Parade, there’s a raft (pun intended) of things to fill your time during the festival. But there’s a new event which is quickly becoming another unmissable entry on Pride’s annual calendar: Pride at the Beach.

Yes, despite launching just last year, Pride at the Beach is already becoming one of those events that you really can’t afford to miss. Taking place on and around the beach at Zandvoort aan Zee - also known as Amsterdam Beach – it’s the perfect excuse to take the short trip out of Amsterdam city centre and discover something new. And to make it even easier, all you need to do to get there is to jump on the Pride Express service from Amsterdam Central Station to Zandvoort.

A special celebration of LGBTQ heroes

What makes it so special? Well, for one this celebration of gay pride sees every beach bar offer an array of events, games and parties to the assortment of visitors that come through the doors, and you’ll find it hard to choose exactly what to do from its bulging list of parties and performances. There’s also a host of dazzling official events taking place throughout the three days that Pride at the Beach is on, including a colourful parade to kick off the festival, a closing party featuring a climatic fireworks display, and exhibitions and film screenings all putting a spotlight on LGBTI causes.

Of course, without wanting to state the obvious, 2018 has also seen some of the finest weather Amsterdam has known for a long, long time. And so it’s highly likely that you’ll have to break out the thongs and mankinis in order to stay cool during this year’s sizzling event (we have our fingers crossed anyway). More importantly, this year’s Pride at the Beach theme is 'heroes', paying tribute to the people that worked tirelessly and risked everything to fight for human rights, for both the LGBTI community and beyond. We couldn’t think of a better reason to spend a few days at the beach, celebrating diversity and inclusion with our brothers and sisters from all around the world. See you on the sand, just make sure to bring your sunscreen.
