Red Light Fashion Amsterdam
During 2008, changes are afoot in Amsterdam. Where once bodies were the primary focus, clothing, design and creativity will now take centre stage. This is thanks to the project Red Light Fashion Amsterdam, a new initiative by fashion consultancy agency HTNK and the City of Amsterdam.
From 19 January 2008, and running throughout the year, sixteen former prostitution establishments in the city's infamous Red Light Distict will be transformed into exciting spaces for fashion creation and display. Rather than women plying their trade under red lights, sixteen top fashion designers from Amsterdam will be given the opportunity to showcase their latest creations in these windows, reaching a large and varied audience in one of the most well known city-areas of the world. With this project the City of Amsterdam underlines its strategy to turn around the image of the Red Light District, which will become a bustling cultural habitat, attracting fresh visitors to a hotspot of creativity.
The opening on 19 January will be conducted by Deputy Mayor Lodewijk Asscher in the presence of various leading representatives from the Dutch fashion industry. It will also mark the opening of Amsterdam International Fashion Week (Saturday 19 to Sunday 27 January 2008).
Representatives of the local fashion scene who are taking part in the project include And Beyond, Bas Kosters, Daryl van Wouw, Mada van Gaans, Roswitha van Rijn, Arnheim Fashion, Noor Wentholt, Jan Taminiau, Jeroen van Tuyl, Conny Groenewegen, Petrovsky & Ramone, Edwin Oudshoorn, G+N and Corné Gabriëls.
