Gay, Lesbian & Bisexual

Known as the 'Gay Capital of Europe', Amsterdam's relaxed and tolerant attitude towards different lifestyles have meant that gay visitors can truly feel free to enjoy the city's historical and cosmopolitan attractions as well as the variety of gay bars, discos, saunas, bookshops, video stores and hotels. There are also several organisations throughout the city just for the GLB community.

Milestones

Since the last third of the past century, Amsterdam has had many milestones for the gay community of the city - but also for the entire world.

Amsterdam Pride & Canal Parade

Since 1995, the first weekend of August has brought with it the Amsterdam Pride celebration and its highlight, the Gay Parade - a brilliant and relaxed festival with decorated boats (and passengers!) sailing through the canals.

Jacob Israel de Haan Poem

Jacob Israel de Haan (1881 - 1924) was a gay Jewish teacher, lawyer, journalist, writer and poet, who wrote the poem on which the dedication of the Homomonument is based.
