Children & Families

Amsterdam is a welcoming place for children and families alike, home to some of the most original, fun, and unique attractions one can find.  Here are some great tips for how to make the most of all this historical and cosmopolitan city has to offer...

Marionettes & Magic Flutes

In a fairytale classic, the Amsterdam Marionette Theatre takes the audience into the exquisite world of childhood innocence – Mozart’s most famous opera, ‘The Magic Flute’.

Artis: Amsterdam's Cultural Zoo

Over 700 species can be found in the 14 beautiful hectares of the country's oldest zoo, featuring an aquarium, botanical gardens, zoological museum, geological museum and a planetarium.

Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum

Stand face to face with Kylie Minogue, pose with royalty, take a trip through the city's Golden Age, or maybe even become the next Idol!

Science & Techonolgy Fun

A brand new, interactive centre for science and technology, the NeMo museum's motto is: Forbidden NOT to touch.

VOC 'Amsterdam' Ship

See sail-makers, sailors and rope-makers at work. Or grab a bite in the galley. Re-live the Golden Age on a copy of a ship that once set sail for the spice trade.

Doll Houses

The Rijksmuseum exhibits two miniature versions of the ornate houses of the Golden Age, containing minute copies of everyday objects and ornaments. Everything is exactly as it used to be in those days - but tinier.

City by Tram

Travel by tram through the historical and modern city, there's much to see. Of the more than 270 trams in Amsterdam, over twenty have been painted with special scenes.

The Royal Palace

Wander through a real palace with large rooms, marble floors and statues, painted ceilings and many paintings.

Pigeons on Dam Square

Dam Square is also famous for its pigeons. Hundreds of pigeons hang around the Palace and the National Monument waiting to be fed.

Climb Towers

The city centre contains centuries-old towers that can be climbed during the milder months.

Museum Tram & Pancakes

A genuine old tram with wooden benches, clanging bells and a friendly conductor travels back and forth between the buzzing city of Amsterdam and a pancake house in the forest.

Pedal Boat

Pedal through the canals of Amsterdam in a pedal boat.

Puppet Theatre

For over one hundred years, children have been enjoying a puppet theatre on Dam Square, in the heart of Amsterdam.

Visit Exotic Countries

In the Tropenmuseum (Museum of the Tropics), you can walk down a street in a North African city, stroll through an Indian village or an Arab market, rest in a Nomadic tent, and much more. There's even a Children’s Museum, where only children between 6 and 12 years old are allowed.

5-Metre-High Giant

At the cafe in the inner courtyard of the Amsterdam Historical Museum lurks a 5-meter-high statue of Goliath and his little side-kick David.

Ajax Museum

The entrance of the football stadium Amsterdam Arena houses the first, the one and the only genuine Ajax Museum, exhibiting the history of the Amsterdam football heroes.

Run a Restaurant

In the Kinderkookcafé, the children do everything: cooking, serving, doing the dishes, working the bar and, of course, writing the bills.

Play with Animals

The Ridammerhoeve farm in the Amsterdam Bos has more than 150 goats and lambs, as well as chickens, chicks, a calf, and even a few potbelly swine.
