Even though De Trut  (meaning old & frumpy) has been going for over 15 years, this basement queer collective is still one of Amsterdam’s best kept & coolest secrets and amply demonstrates ‘alternative’ needn’t equate to suicidal Goths or angry young Punks.

…for the young & hip
Trut is run on a volunteer basis and profits are put back into funding worthy gay & lesbian projects. So be kind to the staff if they’re less than efficient as they’re only payment is free beer! It may all sound a little too politically correct but the funky young groovers that hang here sure know how to party like it’s 1999, probably ‘coz most were still in High School then & don't have jobs to go to Monday morning. Exceptionally cheap entry, very reasonable drink prices and, best of all, at Trut you’ll find Amsterdam’s gay boys and girls actually hanging out together. How very Queer! 

Trés Gay
This is no metrosexual mosh-pit, folks, so be warned: straights are soooooooo not tolerated. Trut has a strict gay and lesbian door policy, although without enforcing same-sex saliva swapping before you’re allowed entry I'm not sure how this is ever policed. And even mimicking hetero-like dirty dancing is strictly frowned upon. Still, it's nice to see Gen Xers reinforcing the sexuality barriers we spent the last 3 decades trying to break down. Ignore the, at times, very dodgy music (I swear, last time I was there they played Barry Manilow’s Copa Cabana three times!), order a basement bargain-priced beer & enjoy the laid-back vibe. Just make sure you get there at least a half hour before the doors open as a line forms well before 11pm and they close doors when full.
