Raw Jazz
Located just off Leidseplein, one of the most vibrant areas of the city, Alto brings you some of the rawest jazz and blues around. Both lesser and well-known bands jam into the early hours. Wednesday nights bring you celebrated tenor saxophonist Hans Dulfer and his band and once in a while you may even find alto daughter Candy Dulfer dropping in with her alto sax. But the nicest extra is there’s no cover charge. The bands are clearly just here to play.
Authentic
Alto has an air of authenticity, which is apparent by the classic dark & smoky room framed by photos and posters of the all-time greats. Squeeze into the narrow seating area facing the stage, watch the musicians do what they do best, and enjoy the appreciation everyone has for the music. Laid-back is the name of the game here and everyone seems to feel at home.
Intimate
The house is packed with a mixed crowd of all ages, styles, and nationalities. From aficionados to the newly initiated, everyone’s here for a good tune and that’s what they get. For us young ones: don’t be intimidated by some of the older folks, they’re those cool parents you always liked. And the bands frequently mingle with the audience during their breaks, which also adds to the inclusive and friendly atmosphere for which the Alto is so famous. With such an intimate ambiance, it’s a great spot for bringing anyone along, but a perfect place to put your first-date jitters at ease. So grab a drink, have a seat, and let the music do the talking. What could be sexier than that?
