Wheel-powered Sprees

A great alternative to the often busy and narrow shopping streets such as the Kalverstraat, Amsterdam has a couple of indoor malls in beautiful, recently renovated historical buildings. These malls provide many of the same brands found on the busier streets nearby, but with more accessible, convenient facilities.

If you’re looking for high-end fashion, then head into the glorious Magna Plaza mall just behind the Royal Palace and the Dam Square. Originally, the beautiful 19th century neo-gothic monument used to house the country’s main post office before being renovated in 1991 to become a spacious and accessible shopper’s paradise. You’ll find luxurious shops for fashion, gifts, accessories, cosmetics, music and perfume. Upon entering the elevator you will be greeted with bird song. Press the button and you’ll find youself right in the middle of a souvenir shop. Greet the vendor and marvel at the stylish interior of the building. A disabled-friendly toilet is to be found on the 2nd floor.

Trendy Shopping
In the historic center, at the end of the Kalverstraat (one of Amsterdams busiest and most crowded shopping streets), one finds the recently-built Kalvertoren. This shopping mall houses some of the trendiest brands in clothing, accessories, perfumes, chocolates and footwear, as well as two department stores and several café’s and restaurants – all spread throughout three spacious floors that are easily accessible by lift. But the best surprise: it’s all literally topped off by the Café & Brasserie Kalvertoren, a glassed-in café located on the fourth floor. Here you’ll be able to enjoy stunning, bird’s eye views of the city center.
