Roll-Through Buys

While Amsterdam’s center has enough shops to satisfy your shopping list, making the shopping rounds can be annoying when your list is long. But this doesn’t mean you have to ignore your call to consume. The wid streets of the markets are pleasant and fun options for satisfying your urge to splurge.
The Albert Cuyp market – which just happened to have celebrated its 100 year anniversary this year – is one of the city’s most famous markets. Fruit & clothing, cheese & fish, spices & furniture, fabrics & flowers… 268 stalls continue to offer an attractive array of everything money can buy on the cheap. (As the market sellers like to say, ‘On the market, a buck is worth two!’) You can shop to your heart’s content at discount prices in the city’s most famous open air market, with enough café terraces to relax with a drink or a tasty bite. Go on Mondays or during the morning hours on weekdays to avoid swarms en masse, otherwise the market can be a bit of a muddle.

Easiest tram stops: Ruysdaelkade. Elevated platform.

‘Tulips from Amsterdam’
If a cheerful bouquet is on your list for that dinner party you'll be attending (as is Dutch tradition) - or flowers and plants just take your fancy - then the ‘Floating Flower Market’ is not to be missed. Situated between the Singel and the Munt, this market parades one of Amsterdam’s most celebrated products: flowers! Bright colours and fantastic fragrances tease the senses with flowers, plants, bulbs, seeds and other gifts for your garden, window sill, pot or vase. Many of the vendors are happy to ship these souvenirs to family and friends, just make sure that they have a sticker proving that they’ve been inspected. Again, try morning hours to avoid the crowds.
Opening times: Mon - Fri, 9:00 – 18:00; Weekends, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.
Easiest tram stops: 1, 2 and 5 (Koningsplein). Elevated platform.
