No Luxuries
Some tourists like to sleep in the lap of luxury. Then there are the real, die-hard travelers- those who are looking to avoid these people and just want a place to crash. Good news. Located on Kerkstraat, minutes away from Leidseplein, this Hans Brinker knows where to stick its finger - it does everything in its power to scare away nagging tourists who care more about their room than the city itself. Quote: “The concept for the Brinker was one where the guest is not important and must come last: they should not feel at home, and also feel un-relaxed and uncomfortable as possible, and so they do.”
Something for Nothing
However, you’d be wrong to judge this book by its cover. In fact, the Hans Brinker offers some of the coolest accommodations in the city. With 500 beds, you’re bound to come across a few interesting people. The rooms are even less than basic, but they’re priced at a modest €21 per night (and they can easily be booked online). But the great news is that where the Hans Brinker scimps on carpets and curtains, it has put in more effort than normal to the atmosphere. The emphasis at this hotel is on staying up rather than going to sleep. The ground floor offers massive dining area with huge wooden tables covered in scratchings from the countless numbers of guests that have passed through. And Hans Brinker has its own bar, open from 16:30 until 2:00 am - the happy hour from 17:00 to 18:00 is very popular with the guests and is a great place to strike up a conversation with fellow backpackers and low-budget travelers.
Graffiti Encouraged
If for whatever reason your night on the town doesn’t work out as planned, you can always come back to the Hans Brinker disco. Located in the basement, it is open from 22:00 until 3:00 only to guests of the Hotel. Walking downstairs, you’ll notice a colourful array of highly encouraged graffiti, so don’t be shy to leave your mark. And the staff at the Brinker isn’t as inconsiderate as you may suspect from their website - the dance floor is enclosed in glass to help keep the noise down.
Get Out and Stay Out!
People who come to the Brinker don’t care about any hotel frills, they’re much happier to have the bare essentials and explore the city. It’s all about getting a group of people together who plan on spending as little time in their room as possible, which is your best bet to having a great time in Amsterdam.
