Best Afternoon Hangout

Looking for a place that offers many options for being lazy? The Museumplein is a great place to kill time and discover some of the city's secret treasures - all in the same place.

Museums & More
Museumplein is a fantastic alternative to the busier parks of the city. Sandwiched between the Stadhouderskade and Van Baerlestraat, behind the Rijksmuseum and across from the Concertgebouw, and just a few minute's walk southeast from the Leidseplein, is a minimalist square with a maximum amount of possibilities. Of course, it houses some of
Amsterdam’s most famous museums: the Rijksmuseum, which hosts the famous Rembrandt Nightwatch; the Stedelijk, with its modern and contemporary masters such as De Kooning, Mondriaan, and Chagall;or the celebrated Van GoghMuseum with more than Van Gogh. But the laid-back square at the center of these museums offers plenty more for you to discover.

For those interested in getting in touch with their inner child, feel free to crank up the water-cyclone or compose a little melody by jumping on chiming steel squares located just outside of the Café Cobra. You can always go for a drink at this trendy café, or just check out their bathrooms, which are a work of magic.
If you feel that you need a thrill, try your luck on the basketball court, where you’re sure to meet locals as well as tourists. Feeling really adventurous? Grab a skateboard or some in-line skates and drop in on the half-pipe. Lesser dare-davils can opt for spectator sports by the pond - a very entertaining spot for watching other people miss the ball, slip off their skates, or struggle on the bike path. Or just lie on the green with a good book or simply doze off for a while. Complete your experience by filling your picknick basket at the mega-sized supermarket on the Van Baerlestraat, just across from the Concertgebouw.

Culture
But the square is not just good for lazing around during good weather. Museumplein has something for every season. Most winters, you’ll find a skating rink to test out your gliding skills. Concerts often take place during Queen’s Day in April or during the city’s cultural lift-off of the ‘Uitmarkt’ at the end of the summer. And from October to June, those looking for a free concert can head over to the Concertgebouw on Wednesdays, from
12:30 to 13:00, to hear public rehearsals by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. And don't forget to have a look at some of the square's sculptures, touching dedications to the Romas and women directly affected by World War II. Museumplein is a microcosm of the lively, diverse and unique spirit of Amsterdam and has something for all ages and lifestyles.

Of course, you can always forget about all that and just spin the water-cyclone uncontrollably.

Trams: 16 (Concertgebouwplein or G. Metsusstraat); 24 (G. Metsusstraat); 3, 5, 11, 12 (Van Baerlestraat)
