Best Student Dishes

Grand Café Dulac on the bohemian Haarlemmerstraat offers its entrees at half-price for students - local and international alike.

Dine in Style
Looking for a good hot meal, some drinks and good music at a discount?  Well, if you have a student I.D. on you, then you’re in luck. You’ll have a hard time finding a place that has more to offer to you then Mediterranean-influenced Grand Café Dulac on the beloved Haarlemerstraat.

Luscious Lunching
Dulac’s lunch menu (available from
12:00 – 17:00) offers a wide variety of soups and sandwiches at very reasonable prices. Try one of the delicious focaccia sandwiches (€3.50) or taste something from the tapas menu, which offers some great dishes (make sure to try the tortilla and the shrimp cakes…you won’t be disappointed) starting at €1.80 an item.

Dinner Delicacies
The dinner menu (served until 22:30) is nothing short of extensive and with a variety Mediterranean cuisine prepared carefully by the kitchen staff, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for. If seafood is your thing, try the mussels with garlic and crème fraiche, or a pasta dish with salmon, Gorgonzola, cream, arugula and sundried tomatoes. Looking for a good vitello? Dulac has you covered, with oven-baked veal served with garlic salpicon and a red-wine sauce.  There are also plenty of vegetarian options, like the risotto flamenco or mozzarella served with a yayla sauce and salad. And we’re only beginning to scratch the menu’s surface. All of the entrees are regularly priced around €15, and students eat for half of that!

Décor and More dulac.gif (32 Kb)
Located inside an old bank, the décor of Café Dulac is something to be seen, with it's funky Art Deco interior. There’s plenty of private seating space, and each table has its own character to bewonder. Whether you’re checking out one of the murals painted on the walls, or taking notice of the cool collectibles such as the cheetah next to the giant chandelier above the bar, you definitely will have something to talk about if your dinner company doesn’t.  And there's always the pool table if you want to combine play with your experience, or the garden terrace in warmer weather for extra enjoyment.

Drinks & Tunes
Don’t miss Friday or Saturday-night drinks at Dulac, when the house DJ spins some chill tunes. If you’re an international student at the University of Amsterdam, then stop by Heineken Happy hour on Tuesdays - from 21:00 – 23:00, UvA students receive a discount on beer (€1.30).  Even if you’re not studying here, it’s still a great way to meet interesting people like yourself.
