Opening Redlight Design

On Friday 19 September deputy Mayor Gehrels opened the Redlight Design Amsterdam (RLDA) project on Oudekerksplein. Redlight Design is all about jewellery: it gives seven talented jewellery designers a chance to showcase their creations in Amsterdam’s crowded Red Light District (‘the Wallen’). The designers will work and possibly live here for a year.

The Redlight Design Project (RLDA) is the second project in the Redlight Concept. It follows in the footsteps of Redlight Fashion Amsterdam, which was a resounding success last year.

Partnership
RDLA is a partnership between the City of Amsterdam (Top City), Droog and Ymere. Amsterdam’s role was to get the ball rolling and bring the parties together. As a result of its efforts, Droog has selected a group of top-quality designers and Ymere has made premises available for a year.

Talent development
Seven talented designers will showcase their products in a busy part of the city. The RDLA project will also boost the development of top (inter)national talent in the creative sector. The jewellery designers will work and live in temporarily unoccupied buildings, which have fallen vacant through the efforts of the city council and the district to clamp down on crime in the area (Project 1012). RLDA is a temporary project and no indication for eventual designation of the buildings.

Opening
Last Friday, Deputy Mayor Carolien Gehrels, District Chairman Els Iping, co-founder of Droog Gijs Bakker, and Stefan Schuwer from Ymere opened the project by starting up an automatic ring machine, which hangs in the window of an atelier. The idea is to entice visitors to the Wallen to buy a ring for their favourite ‘sweetheart’.

Experimenta
As a special tribute to the Experimenta Design Amsterdam 2008 Biennial, the Redlight Designers will dress their windows within the theme of ‘Space and Place’. The results will be on view till 2 November 2008.
