New ambitions for Old Centre

The Damrak, Rokin and the Red Light District must become a special and attractive entrance point to Amsterdam. This was decided by the City Council and the board of the Centre borough council.

The old centre of Amsterdam must again become a place where people can relax and enjoy themselves, and of which the city can be proud, the council said. It intends to act against the deterioration of the Damrak and the (near) criminal infrastructure of the Red Light District.

Working with well-known banks, developers, corporations, investors and respected entrepreneurs, the council intends to invest in the 1012 district (this being the postcode number). More opportunities should be available to entrepreneurs to make money legitimately and in a pleasant environment. A good example is the success achieved with the micro-approach on the Zeedijk.

The future vision for the city’s old centre includes the following elements:

  • Structural reduction of attractive criminal roles, especially with regard to window prostution.
  • Encouragement of high-quality companies, with selections made on the basis of the policy already being carried out by Amsterdam Topstad.
  • Initiating large-scale investments in public spaces, existing property and new projects.
  • Offering space to creative entrepreneurs.
  • Improving the quality of life.
  • Art, culture and new modern crafts as economic weapons in giving the region grandeur.
  • Developing a centre-specific hotel policy.
