Mayor of Amsterdam wins Dutch advertising award

Job Cohen has been declared ‘Dutch advertising man of the year’. The mayor of Amsterdam is the first politician ever to receive the award. Cohen was handed his award on 12 November by Dutch trade magazine Marketing Tribune, the initiator of the prize.

Marketing Tribune said the mayor deserved his title for his ‘continuing commitment to the city as a creative capital, evident in the I Amsterdam campaign, the Amsterdam Topstad initiative, the so-called cultural breeding grounds, as well as the recent Picnic 2007 project’.

Mayor Cohen says he was pleasantly surprised to receive the prize. "Me, advertising man of the year? I must honestly say that isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when I think about my job. I can understand the prize if I see it as recognition of the efforts of the Amsterdam council and our partners like Amsterdam Partners to position the city as a creative business centre. And well, it’s just part of my role as mayor to be the face of our projects and policies.”

The mayor said that the award showed that a city like Amsterdam can be seen as a brand, and that it has been important and worthwhile to position the city in this way. “This prize shows that we are on the right road.”
