Amsterdam houses two universities with some 3500 lecturers and 37,000 students, 17 higher vocational institutions with some 29,000 students, and secondary education is provided by over 60 schools and school communities. There are also over 200 primary schools and 50 for special needs.
Primary Schools
Law states that children must attend school from the age of four, and there are many options available for basis onderwijs (primary school). One can choose to send their child to the nearest school, usually around the corner, but there are also schools available with specific pedagogical philosophies and beliefs (such as Montessori, Steiner, religious schooling and others ). Amsterdam has over 190 primary schools, with 28 of them catering to special education.
Secondary School System
In Amsterdam more than 53,000 school pupils are educated at 31 secondary schools. The Dutch school system provides courses at the following levels: MAVO (lower general education), HAVO (higher general education), VWO (pre-university education), VBO (initial professional education), AVO (general education) and 'Gymnasium' (high-level grammar or high school).
