Main Universities & Scientific Institutions 

  • University of Amsterdam (UvA) The first classes were given at the Atheneum illustre in 1632. The Athenaeum Illustre was legally recognised as an institute of higher education in 1815. In 1877 it became a municipal university which it remained until the financial responsibility was taken over by the nation in the 1960s. The UvA has grown significantly in the last few decades and currently has some 21,000 students and 2200 lecturers.

  • VU University Amsterdam  (VU)
    Statesman and theologian Abraham Kuyper founded his Vrije Universiteit (VU University Amsterdam) in 1880 as a private initiative: the first Dutch university not controlled by church or state. The VU believes that commitment to society is very important; academic endeavour is more valuable when it makes a contribution to the world. The VU has more than 19,000 students and 4000 staff, all located on one campus to make cooperation across subject boundaries easier.

    The national research institute for mathematics and information technology.
  • International Institute for Social History
    One of the world's largest documentation and research institutes for social history, especially the labour movement.
  • Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW)
    The KNAW is a national institute for the sciences which, among other things, assesses teh quality of Dutch scientific research and is an umbrella organisation for a large number of scientific research institutes.
  • Dutch Institute for Nuclear Physics and High Energy Physics
    Co-ordinating and support institute in the field of nuclear physics.

 Higher Vocational Education

  • HES Amsterdam 
    Honouring a tradition in business studies that goes back to 1867, HES Amsterdam School of Business (hereafter referred to as HES Amsterdam) is one of the largest single-faculty institutes of professional business education in the Netherlands. It offers a wide range of business-related programmes preparing students for Bachelor and Master Degrees. Support courses are included in the degree programmes such as foreign languages, law and psychology. Currently, the school has a staff of 300 and some 5,500 registered students.
  • Hogeschool INHOLLAND 
    INHOLLAND University offers a wide range of internationally oriented programmes covering a variety of professions in Amsterdam or one of a number of sites throughout the so-called ‘Randstad’. Through a network of companies and partner institutions, ample opportunities are available to acquire practical experience. A broad range of Bachelor & Master programmes are offered in fields such as IT, Management, Marketing, Media, & Communications.

Art Education

  • Gerrit Rietveldacademie
    Renowned art academy for individual day and evening classes.
  • National Academy of Fine Art
    Young artists from the Netherlands and abroad work here as members for one or two years in (and outside) their own designed workstudies on research, advanced studies, production and presentation. They are supported by artists, theory experts and technicians.
  • Amsterdam College for the Arts
    The Amsterdam College for the Arts (AHK) provides higher art education in many disciplines: fine arts, film and television, theatre, dance, music, architecture, museum studies and cultural management.
    Among others, the AHK comprises the Sweelinck Conservatory and the Architecture Academy.

  • EFA - Educatieve Faculteit Amsterdam
    The Educatieve Faculteit Amsterdam (EFA) is an association of the teacher training institutes of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam and the Hogeschool Holland.

  • Grafisch Lyceum Amsterdam
    The Grafisch Lyceum Amsterdam is an institue for design and media techonolgy, providing a broad package of up-to-date day and evening courses in design, reclame, multimedia, management, printmedia, podium- en AV-techniek .

  • Hubertus Vakschool
    The Hubertus Vakschool provides courses for bread and pastry bakers, cooks, catering services and tourism.
  • ROC van Amsterdam
    The ROC van Amsterdam is one of the biggest Regional Education Centres in the Netherlands, with branches in Amsterdam, Amstelveen and Hoofddorp. It offers alternative courses for students in High School level or those seeking alternative vocational training.
