Work Permits

The rules concerning a work permit in the Netherlands are quite complex, with much of the decision based on the applicant's nationality and/or the nationality of the spouse. The Centrum voor Work en Inkomen (CWI) processes these applications.

The Work Permit (tewerkstellingsvergunning)
As with the residents permits, the rules are different for EU/EEA (The European Economic Area – EEA – includes: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom) citizens than for non-EU/EEA citizens. Some people do not require a work permit at all and only a residency permit, while some need to obtain a work permit before seeking employment, and some may only be granted a work permit by an employer who is able to apply for a work permit on their behalf. This is determined mainly by the outcome of the Resident Permit application as stated on the back of the granted Resident Card.

Contact the CWI
After establishing the regulations relative to the specific situation and country of origin, job seekers and employers must contact the employment and income arm of the government called the Centrum voor Werk en Inkomen (CWI) to process applications for work permits. CWI is an independent administrative body (ZBO) that works on assignment from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment.
