How does the City Card work1.1 Do I have to wait in line at attractions and museums with the City Card?
If you have an I amsterdam City Card, you still need to join the queue at the participating museums and attractions. This also applies if you have pre-purchased a ticket for a museum or attraction.
1.2 What can I do to avoid the waiting lines at popular museums
At popular museum such as the Van Gogh Museum we advise you to visit these locations early in the morning or at the end of the afternoon.
1.3 How do I activate my City Card?
The City Card consists of two parts; museums/attractions and public transport. The museum component will be activated at your first visit to a museum, attraction or canal cruise. The public transport component is activated at your first check in on a GVB bus, tram or metro. The City Card is not activated when you visit a discount location.
1.4 How long is the City Card valid?
The museum component of the map is automatically activated when you first visit a museum or attraction. The public transport component is automatically activated when you first use a tram, bus or metro. After activation, each part is valid for 24, 48, 72 or 96 hours.
1.5 How long are the discount offers valid?
The 25% discount and free offers are valid for the entire calendar year - except for the one-time offers, when this is stated at the discount offers.
1.6 Can I share my City Card with someone else?
No, the City Card is strictly personal. Once the card has been activated, it cannot be shared or given to another user.
What’s included in the City Card2.1 Where can I see a complete list of all the I amsterdam City Card offers?
A complete range of City Card offers are listed out on the website. When you buy the I amsterdam City Card, you will receive a city map with detailed information about every offer which is included in the card.
2.2 Does the City Card include a train ticket between Schiphol and Central Station?
No, the City Card is only valid for bus, tram and metro lines of the GVB in Amsterdam. Train services are not included. If you wish to travel by train, an additional Amsterdam Region Ticket Travel can be purchased. This ticket includes the use of trains within the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area.
2.3 Can I use my City Card on Connexxion, Arriva or EBS bus lines?
No, the City Card is only valid on GVB bus, tram and metro lines in Amsterdam. The ticket is not valid on Connexxion, Arriva and EBS bus lines. You can buy the Amsterdam Region Day Ticket if you want to travel to and in the Metropolitan Area.
2.4 Can I visit a museum more than once?
Each museum or attraction included in the City Card, can only be visited once.
2.5 How many canal cruises can I take with the City Card?
Each City Card holder can take only one canal cruise with the City Card. You can choose one of the participating canal cruise providers.
2.6 Is entrance to the Rijksmuseum included in the City Card?
With the I amsterdam City Card you receive a discount of € 2.50 euros at the Rijksmuseum. The regular entrance price of the Rijksmuseum is € 17,50 for adults.
2.7 Is the entrance of the Anne Frank House included in the City Card?
No, the Anne Frank House is not included in the I amsterdam City Card. Via the Anne Frank website you can book a ticket and a timeslot. The regular entrance price for the Anne Frank House is € 9,00 for adults and € 9,50 with a timeslot.
2.8 How do I use the discount offers?
You will receive discounts offered by the I amsterdam City Card by showing your Card upon purchase. It is important that you mention you have a City Card before you order, particularly in restaurants. You can enjoy these discounts throughout the year that your City Card is valid in.
2.9 How do I receive my free gifts?
You will receive your free gift simply by showing your City Card at the participating location. You can claim your free gift at any time during the calendar year, even after your City Card activation has expired. However, please note that the free gifts at ‘Eetsalon Van Dobben’ and ‘De Drie Fleschjes’ can only be claimed when your City Card is activated.
2.10 Do I receive additional special discounts with the I amsterdam City Card?
Occasionally, there are additional one-time deals offered with the City Card. Go to the Special Offers page to see if there are additional offers on.
Purchasing your City Card3.1 Which payment methods are accepted?
If you purchase your City Card online at www.iamsterdam.com, you can pay by credit card (JCB, Visa or Mastercard). If you buy your City Card at one of the selling locations, you can usually pay cash, by credit card (Visa or MasterCard) or debit card, depending on the payment options at that location.
3.2 Is it possible to receive my City Card at home by post/courier?
Yes, when you order your City Card online at www.iamsterdam.com/citycard, it is possible to choose the option to have the City Card delivered at your home. It takes 10 working days for the card to arrive. International shipping costs via DHL depend on the delivery address. You will receive a free A-Mag magazine and city map with your City Card.
Picking up your City Card4.1 I have ordered my City Card online. Where can I pick it up?
After arrival in Amsterdam, you can collect your City Card at the I amsterdam Store in Amsterdam Central Station (IJhal), the I amsterdam Visitor Center Stationsplein (other side Central Station) or the I amsterdam Visitor Center at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (arrivals 2).
4.2 I will arrive late evening in Amsterdam and the I amsterdam Visitor Centers and the I amsterdam Store will be closed by that time. How will I receive my City Card?
You can visit the I amsterdam Visitor Centers or the I amsterdam Store the next day.
4.3 Can I receive my purchased City Card at my hotel?
This is not possible. You can pick up your City Card at the I amsterdam Store in Amsterdam Central Station (IJhal), the I amsterdam Visitor Center Stationsplein (other side Central Station) or the I amsterdam Visitor Center at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (arrivals 2).
Cancelling or changing your City Card5.1 I had to cancel my trip to Amsterdam. Can I return my I amsterdam City Card?
Unfortunately, you cannot return the City Card. However, the City Card is valid until 31 December in the year the City Card is valid, which means you can still use the card for a visit later that year.
5.2 I am currently visiting Amsterdam but unexpectedly have to return home early. I have only used a part of my I amsterdam City Card. Can I get a refund for a part of the amount I paid for the card?
Unfortunately, this is not possible.
5.3 I have bought an 48 hours City Card , but I would prefer a 72 hours City Card. Can I change it?
This is possible. Please visit after arrival in Amsterdam one of our Visitor Centres at Schiphol or Amsterdam Central Station, or in the I amsterdam Store. After paying the extra amount you can receive the new City Card.
5.4 I have bought a 48 hours City Card, but I would prefer a 24 hours City Card. Can I change it?
Unfortunately, this is not possible.
5.5 I have chosen to have the City Card sent to my house. The City Card hasn’t arrived and tomorrow I will be leaving for Amsterdam. Can you help me?
After you have booked the City Card with home delivery, you will receive a track and trace routing to your package, so you can contact DHL or the delivery service. In case there is still a problem you can contact us, via the e-mail address at the end of this FAQ. You cannot opt for home delivery if your arrival in Amsterdam is within 10 days of the booking.
5.6 I have chosen to have the City Card sent to my house, but I would prefer to pick up the City Card in Amsterdam. Is that an option?
Unfortunately it is not possible, as we cannot to change this in our system.
Kids, families & senior citizens6.1 Is there a special price for kids?
No, there isn’t a special kids rate for the I amsterdam City Card. Please check out the Kids prices factsheet.
6.2 Are there special family prices for the I amsterdam City Card?
No, there aren’t special discounts for families or groups. The I amsterdam City Card is for individual use.
6.3 Is the I amsterdam City Card useful for children?
Many museums already offer free admission or special discounts for children. The I amsterdam City Card offers significant savings for children 10 years and older.
6.4 What are the discounts museums give for children?
Many museums offer free entrance or reduces prices for children. For instance children till and including 18 will have free entrance at the Rijksmuseum. Children till and including 17 will have free entrance at the Van Gogh and Het Stedelijk Museum.
6.5 Is the I amsterdam City Card useful for seniors (65+) or disabled visitors?
Many museums and attractions already offer substantial discounts for seniors (65+) and disabled people. However, if you plan to visit a lot of locations and make frequent use of public transport, the City Card can still offer significant savings. In this City Card flyer you can check out the regular prices at the included museums and decide what locations you would like to visit.
Groups and the City Card7.1 Is the City Card useful for groups?
No, the I amsterdam City Card is an individual product and is not meant to be uses by groups.
7.2 What can you do if you want to visit a museum as a group?
Groups can contact the locations in order to book their visit at museums or attractions, best is to do this well in advance (often at least one week). Possibly you can receive a group discount.
Problems8.1 My card is not working. What should I do?
If you have problems with your I amsterdam City Card, please go to the I amsterdam Visitor Centre at Stationsplein 10 (opposite the Central Station).
8.2 My City Card is lost or stolen. Can I get a replacement card?
Unfortunately, we do not offer refunds or replacements for lost or stolen cards. If you have travel insurance, the City Card might be reimbursed, depending on the insurance coverage you have.
8.3 I cancelled my trip and cannot use my City Card. Can I get a refund?
No, it is not possible to get a refund for an unused City Card. The City Card is valid till the 31st December of the year of validity, possibly you plan your trip to Amsterdam later in the year.
8.4 During the ordering process online I have received an error message. Can you inform me if the payment was made and if the booking was completed? As I didn’t receive a voucher.
