Nature & Geography

A city sprung out of marshes and grasslands, surrounded by water and 'floating' on a web of canals. How can that be? Throughout time, Amsterdam has uncovered innovative ways to thrive within it's natural surroundings.

Amsterdam & Water

Amsterdam has had an intimate relationship with water for ages. Find out more about this fascinating history and contemporary Amsterdam’s current relationship with this ‘source of life’.

Environmental Policy

The municipality's environmental policy plan aims to assure that the quality of life in the city remains high for inhabitants as well as the environment.

Biology & Ecology

Amsterdam is surrounded by greenery, water and houses a thriving ecosystem. The city planning policies strive to protect these systems.

Parks

The Plantage became the city's first park in 1682, when reclaimed land proved impossible for building. The city now has 28 parks - including the Vondelpark, which attracts some nine million people every year.
