-1984–1990: Dutch branch of Friends of the Earth in Amsterdam (Vereniging Milieudefensie), educational employee
-1990–1992: University lecturer in Environmentology, Institute for Environmental Sciences (CML), University of Leiden
-1990–1994: Chairperson of GroenLinks (the Green Left Alliance) (national management) 
-May 1994 – April 2006: Member of the Dutch House of Representatives: spokeswoman for Justice, Asylum / Migration, Security / Police, Agriculture, Conservation, Fisheries, Animal welfare.
