Education

Tjeerd Herrema attended the Groningen College for Economics, specialising in Economic Law. In addition, he successfully completed the first year of the study programme in Law at the University of Groningen. After this, he followed several courses at the Free University of Amsterdam, the Catholic University of Tilburg, the Leeuwarden Business School and the University of Groningen.

Work experience

In 1999 Tjeerd Herrema became Chairman of the Amsterdam Borough of Zeeburg. Until 2002 he was responsible for the portfolios of safety, education, economics and personnel & organisation. From 2002 to 2006 he held the portfolios of safety, community management, traffic and transport, urban planning and housing, economics and services. In addition, he was chairman of the Meeting for Borough Chairpersons (overleg voor stadsdeelvoorzitters) and a member of Amsterdam’s Municipal Integrity Committee.

Before becoming Chairman of the Borough of Zeeburg, Tjeerd Herrema worked for the FNV vakcentrale (National Trade Union Confederation) for 9 years. Among other things, during this period he was a member of several advisory committees of the Social and Economic Council and he was responsible for the management of organisations implementing policies concerning social security and the labour market. Moreover, he was head of regional labour matters for the Province of North Holland. Before he took on his job at the FNV he was a policy officer with the Province of Friesland and member of the Leeuwarden Town Council.
