International Affairs

The Office for International Relations is responsible for advising on, co-ordinating and stimulating the City of Amsterdam’s international policy. The International Relations portfolio is held by Mayor Job Cohen.

Amsterdam’s international policy focuses upon co-operation with cities in the countries of origin of large groups of local residents. They include Surinam, Ghana and Turkey. We have also established links with a number of cities in the new member states of the European Union. For example, Riga in Latvia. When entering into such a relationship, Amsterdam considers its own strengths and experiences with a view to reinforcing local government in the partner city and to sharing and transferring knowledge.

Relations with the European institutions in Brussels are also important to the city. Eurolink, a section of the City of Amsterdam’s Economic Affairs Department, provides information about regulations and available subsidies as well as maintaining a representative in Brussels to promote Amsterdam’s interests there.
