Policies
Of the various policies the City of Amsterdam promotes, there are several core policies that support the fabric of the City's character. Many of these have gained much interest from the international community. Here are a few examples of Amsterdam policy that help define the city's current developments and atmosphere.
'We Amsterdammers'
The 'Wij Amsterdammers' (‘We, the people of Amsterdam’) action plan forms an initial answer to the question of how we should interact with each other in the city and how we can best defend ourselves against people who threaten our freedom.
'We Amsterdammers' Follow-Up
Follow-up action plan to ‘Wij Amsterdammers’ . The Amsterdam offensive aimed at countering extremism and polarisation.
Public Safety
Public safety and security are important policy priorities for the City of Amsterdam, which, in co-operation with the police and courts, has been working to assure that the city meets the high standards set out by the 2002 - 2006 Policy Agreement.
International Affairs
The Office for International Relations is responsible for advising, co-ordinating and stimulating the City of Amsterdam’s international policy. The International Relations portfolio is held by Mayor Job Cohen.
Sports
The City's policy on Sports aims to keep Amsterdam healthy & active, with approximately half of the population of Amsterdam participating in some kind of sport.
Urban Development Projects
Amsterdam’s living, working and transport infrastructures are being given a complete overhaul. Some of these major projects are already under way, others will begin soon.
Prostitution
While the practice of prostitution was legalised nationally in October 2000, Amsterdam has long had a tolerant attitude towards the sector that has been coupled with clear regulations that have been in force for a while.
Drugs
Amsterdam has several policies regarding drug use and the treatment of drug addiction. Much of the policiy is aimed around prevention, distringuishing between hard and soft frugs, and and treatment.
