How does the city government work?

Amsterdam is run by the City Council and the Mayor & College of Aldermen. The Council is the highest authority in the city of Amsterdam and is responsible for all important decisions. Amongst other things, the Council sets the city's annual budget.

Dualism: what does it involve?

The basis for Amsterdam's system is the division of tasks and duties between the mayor, aldermen and council members.

Portfolios: Mayor & Aldermen

The following portfolios list the main responsibilities of the Mayor & the Aldermen.

Policies

Of the various policies the City of Amsterdam promotes, there are several core policies that support the fabric of the City's character. Many of these have gained much interest from the international community. Here are a few examples of Amsterdam policy that help define the city's current developments and atmosphere.

Separation of Powers Act

As a consequence of the Local Authorities (Separation of Powers) Act in 2002, the competences of the City Council and the City Executive are now more clearly delineated.

Council Committees

The City Council has created seven committees to match the areas of the seven members of the board of the Mayor and Aldermen.

Neighbourhood Councils

The city's first neighbourhoods were established in the early 1980s, when they were given extensive independent powers, their own budget and team of civil servants. Find out about how it works today.

Having a Say

In line with a typical Dutch trait of consensus, having your say in city plans and policies is a highly complex, but highly valued right. If Amsterdammers, action groups or organisations do not agree with council plans, there are various options available.
