Zuidas

An urban extension project ideally located between Amsterdam and Schiphol is rising skyward at the Zuidas (‘South Axis’), a mixed commercial, residential and recreational urban centre for the 21st century.

The Zuidas offers excellent accessibility by air, rail, road and public transport. It is uniquely set on either side of the southern tangent of Amsterdam’s A10 ring road, and its multimodal transport hub will serve the future HSL high-speed international rail link as well as the rapid North/South Line metro via Amsterdam city centre, and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is less than 10 minutes away.

No fewer than one million square metres of office space (providing workspace for up to 50,000 people) and 9,000 dwellings, owner-occupied as well as social-sector rentals, are to be built at Zuidas between now and 2040. The ING and ABN Amro banks already have world-class international headquarters in Zuidas, as well as the Mexx Design Centre. Other Zuidas residents include the Free University medical centre (VUmc), with its teaching hospital and research facilities, and the Rietveld Academy art and design college.

To create a truly balanced urban centre, the Zuidas development is set to include top-notch cultural and recreational facilities, for example the Van den Ende Theatre, a 1,850-seat theatre specially for musicals that is being built by the leading Dutch media entrepreneur and musical impresario on a site close to the RAI congress and exhibition centre.
