South Bank of the IJ

The Zuidelijke IJ-oever (South Bank of the IJ) and the Oostelijk Havengebied(Eastern Harbour District) are former dockland areas to the east of the Central Station which are being redeveloped, with residential, commercial and recreational functions.

The Central Station itself is to become a multimodal ‘travellers’ island’ for up to 300,000 travellers a day to an urban design by Benthem Crouwel Architects that includes a new, glass-roofed bus station.

The Oosterdokseiland (Eastern Dock Island, or ODE) is being redeveloped with an urban programme that includes about 225,000 square metres of functionally mixed space, for example a purpose-built Chinatown, a music conservatory, a central public library, hotels, shops and much more. Continuing this ‘pearl necklace’ eastward, the Music Centre and Bimhuis complex is nearing completion next to the wave-like Passenger Terminal Amsterdam where ocean liners dock. A waterside strip of new construction, including high-quality offices and refurbished warehouses, connects to the former dockland peninsulas that now primarily serve a residential function.
