Infrastructure
The Noord/Zuidlijn and the Zuidtangent will create, respectively, a multimodal transfer hub beneath the city centre and interconnect the region’s major industrial and business park zones.
The Noord/Zuidlijn (North/South Line) is set for completion in March 2011. It is a massive project requiring the latest tunneling and engineering techniques to tunnel 9.5 kilometres from Amsterdam-Noord, via the Central Station multimodal transfer hub, beneath the city centre and onward to the Zuidas (South Axis), where the multimodal hub of Amsterdam Zuid/WTC is the station from which the HSL high-speed railway will connect with other European capitals.
The Zuidtangent (South Tangent) bus route is a dedicated bus lane that interconnects the region’s major industrial and business park zones. The route runs from IJmuiden via Haarlem and Hoofddorp to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, then further east via the Zuidas, Amsterdam-Zuidoost and Diemen to IJburg. Buses run every 7.5 minutes in peak periods and make record time due to the traffic-free lanes.
