WesterToren, Westerkerk Amsterdam

Prinsengracht 281
1016 GW AMSTERDAM
Environs: Canals

Church (1631) with a memorial plaque of Rembrandt. The church has 48 bells by, amongst others, F. and P. Hemony (1658). City carilloneur Boudewijn Zwart plays the carillon.

The tower offers a breath-taking view of the city centre and Jordaan district. The 85-meter tower of the Westerkerk church dates back to 1638 and although slightly off-balance is completely stable. Recent restorations have included the railings along the staircase, and the renewal of the lead and wood work. Even the emperor’s crown – including the lightening rod – was given a facelift. In place of its former yellow hue the crown's hood was given a brilliant blue.
