The Portuguese Israeli Synagogue is one of the largest in the world and dates back to 1675. Its architect, Elias Bouwman was supposedly inspired by the Temple of Solomon, and it is certainly a treasure in Amsterdam.
Secluded entrance
In the 17th Century, synagogues in Amsterdam could be visible, but their entrances were not allowed to stand out. Once inside, marvel at the intact 17th century interior, be amazed by the mammoth proportions and appreciate that this treasure escaped Nazi destruction and is still in use today.
