There couldn’t be a greater contrast. In the middle of Amsterdam’s busy Kalverstraat, sandwiched between dozens of shops, is the neo-gothic gable of the HH. Petrus en Paulus church, better known as the “Parrot” (Papegaai). Built around 1700, it was a secret church, and served as a conventicle during the Reformation.
Parrot Church
At the door of the HH. Petrus en Paulus church a large sign invites the shopping-mad crowd to devote 15 minutes to God ("Een kwartier voor God"). This Roman-Catholic church is thought to have been built in the garden of a bird-dealer, hence the parrot on the gable.
