Turn on the Lights

With 'Turn on the Lights', de Bijenkorf annually opens the festive season in brilliant spectacle and festive cheer at the end of November - and you are invited!

Opening the festive season

De Bijenkorf Turn on the Lights

In 2011, Turn on the Lights was hosted by Mayor of Amsterdam Eberhard van der Laan and Dutch actress Viviënne van den Assem.

A magical 45-minute theatrical light show was followed by a performance by Dutch musician Ellen ten Damme.

The lights were subsequently turned on: more than 106,800 energy-efficient LED lights (spanning 675 m2!) illuminated on the facade of the majestic De Bijenkorf building. Guests were then invited inside De Bijenkorf for a celebratory glass of Prosecco.

Illuminating the heart of the city

A massive illuminated Christmas tree is also erected in front of de Bijenkorf at the beginning of December. The tree and de Bijenkorf's festive facade then form a centrepiece for the Christmas decorations already installed on the lamp posts, making Dam Square an attractive Amsterdam highlight every festive season.
