The second 'Welcome to Amsterdam' event of the year will be held on Wednesday, 28 September 2011 at Amsterdam Bright City. The Mayor of Amsterdam, Mr Eberhard van der Laan will open the event which is expected to be attended by around 200 expatriates and their partners.
Getting settled in a new city can be quite an undertaking. After you’ve managed to get all your paperwork completed and found a place to stay, numerous questions can arise. Questions such as: Where do I find like-minded internationals? or, Am I the only one that finds the Dutch a little peculiar?
On 28 September 2011, we would like to welcome you to the city and also offer you the opportunity to meet and network with others in your situation. Several international social groups and clubs will be present to introduce themselves.
In break-out sessions, you can choose to receive an introduction to the Dutch language, take a cultural awareness course with a trainer from the Royal Tropical Institute or watch Suitcases & Sacrifices, a show illustrating real expat life with a touch of Dutch sobriety.

Don't let language hold you back - attend this break-out session provided by one of the Expatcenter’s partners.
Understanding the Dutch: Deborah Abrahams, Intercultural Trainer of the Royal Tropical Institute sheds some light on her experiences with the Dutch. A resident of the Netherlands for more than 15 years, she is still struck by certain Dutch idiosyncrasies (directness, 9 to 5 mentality and so forth). Cultural differences is a serious subject but here it is introduced with a welcome dose of humour. In just 45 minutes, you will receive practical tools to use in daily life in the Netherlands.
Suitcases & Sacrifices: At breakneck speed, this play exposes real expat life with a touch of Dutch sobriety. Recognisable, humorous and touching! Read a review of Suitcases & Sacrifices.
