Festive market fun in Amsterdam

There's nothing quite like the atmosphere of a Christmas market to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. And Amsterdam has no shortage of seasonal shopping opportunities, with  a range of independent festive markets taking place every week leading up to Christmas.

From traditional Dickensian markets that aim to capture all the magic of a traditional Victorian Christmas to trendy food festivals inside old industrial buildings, there's a Christmas market to suit everyone. While many take place in Amsterdam itself, some of the more rewarding markets can be found slightly out of town in areas like Haarlem, Lelystad and Keukenhof. See our pick of the top 5 Christmas markets in the Amsterdam Area

Ice skating and more

As well as the Christmas markets, don't miss Amsterdam's other festive hotspots (or should we say coldspots) in the form of winter ice rinks. Museumplein hosts a convivial ice rink village flanked by traditional wooden chalets selling hearty festive food and drinks, while the Jaap Eden ice skating centre is also popular in winter months with its huge, 400m outdoor rink surrounded by fairy lanterns.

So whether you’re seeking shopping inspiration, ice-skating fun, or just a sweet snack under the fairy lights, see below for our selection of seasonal treats to be found both in and outside Amsterdam.

Note: In 2016 there will be no Winter Market on Rembrandtplein.
