Catherine the Great in Amsterdam

The period of Catherine the Great’s rule, 1762 to 1796, is often considered the Golden Age of the Russian Empire. Her memoirs reveal that she was not only an avid art collector, but also a confidante for artists such as Voltaire and Diderot. Alongside some spectacular portraits and paintings, many of her possessions, such as jewellery, dresses and other fine artefacts, help to illustrate her life and rule.
