Amsterdam and the EU
The presidency of the Council of the EU rotates between the member states, changing every six months. In 2016, the Netherlands will hold the presidency for the 12th time. Part of the presidency’s responsibility is planning and chairing meetings of ministers and officials from all EU member states, plus preparatory bodies. The presidency is responsible for driving forward the Council's work on EU legislation in an honest and neutral manner, ensuring cooperation among member states. Read more about Amsterdam and Europe.
The official cultural programme accompanying the Dutch presidency of the EU in 2016 is the Europe by People festival, a one-off cultural festival in Amsterdam including art, performances, design and storytelling. In addition, there will be a wealth of other cultural events and activities.
