Amsterdam's markets abound with the vibrant colours, smells and sights that define this multicultural city, meaning open-air markets are one of the best ways to soak up the local culture. So go for a stroll and discover the village atmosphere of the city's neighbourhood markets, most of which are open year-round, rain or shine.

Shopping with the locals in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has a number of lively neighbourhood markets filled with food, flowers, clothes, housewares and other bits of kitsch. Open six days a week (Monday to Saturday), you can sample local snacks, pick up the daily necessities and rub shoulders with the locals at the Albert CuypmarktDappermarkt, Nieuwmarkt or Ten Katemarkt.

Organic farmers' markets

Whether you call it eco, bio or organic, Amsterdam has a few markets dedicated to sustainably produced products. The focus is on food, but you’ll also find everything from clothes to cleaning supplies. Head to the Nieuwmarkt organic market on Saturday, Noordermarkt on Saturday (until 17:00), or the Haarlemmerplein on Wednesday. The impressive Pure Markt also introduces you to vendors selling a variety of sustainable, organic and artisanal products, while the Neighbourfood Market sells delicious food from local producers.

Flea markets

Amsterdam’s best-known flea market is on the Waterlooplein six days a week. The variety of stalls almost defies definition – there's everything from spray paint and bicycle parts to vintage clothes and pillowcases. Serious treasure hunters should also head over to the IJ-hallen in Noord, as this monthly event is the largest flea market in the Netherlands.

Selling everything you can imagine

Amsterdam also has quite a few speciality markets. Be it flowers, art, books, textiles or stamps & coins, there’s pretty much something for everyone. So start planning your next shopping trip to one of Amsterdam’s many markets.
