Top 10 terraces in Amsterdam Zuid

It’s no wonder that some of the best terraces in Amsterdam are located in the exclusive area of Amsterdam Zuid—it’s where you’ll find the famous Vondelpark, trendy De Pijp and dozens of tree-lined streets, creating the ideal spot for a relaxing al fresco meal.

Strandzuid

While the centre of Amsterdam boasts most of the historic canals, Amsterdam Zuid has its own share of waterside terraces, including Strandzuid: a place where guests can visit the beach while staying in the city. The restaurant’s menu is all “surf, turf and earth”, meaning there are plenty of fish, meat and vegetarian options; for summertime flavour boost, the meats are almost exclusively prepared on the traditional charcoal grill and oven.

George WPA

Feel like a real Parisian at George WPA, a stylish brasserie located just a few minutes from Vondelpark. Guests can sit in the sun almost all day long on the large, crisp white terrace and enjoy a club sandwich (chicken, salmon, tuna, veggie and more), one of their wafer-thin pizzas or quintessentially French dishes such as duck confit. Finish off your meal with a classic martini, served the way you like it.

Volt

On weekdays, visit Volt to enjoy the late afternoon sun with a drink—gin and tonics are the specialty, but the beer menu is extensive and local—and bar bites, including charcuterie and cheese platters as well as the Dutch favourite bitterballen. Volt opens earlier on weekends for lunch, serving up poached eggs, sandwiches and, for those that partied a little too hard the night before, The Hangover Cure: a Bloody Mary.

Tolbar

A hidden gem of De Pijp, Tolbar is more than just a café; it’s a creative space in the Cinetol, a venue for art and culture, so there’s always something more to enjoy than just the food, drinks and a sunny spot on the terrace. Whether you’re there to enjoy a sandwich for lunch, socialise with friends during the evening, or chow down on hearty comfort foods for dinner, there’s always a spot at Tolbar.

Wildschut

After visiting the nearby Museumplein, take a seat at the almost as historic Café Wildschut, one of Amsterdam’s most well-known and oldest grand cafes. The large terrace is particularly recognisable, and offers a great place to people-watch while soaking in the sun and enjoying a dish from its menu of Dutch and international dishes, including burgers, Thai curry, ravioli and a selection of snacks.

Amstelhaven

To see one of Amsterdam’s largest terraces built over the water, head to the bar and restaurant at Amstelhaven. After cruising the canals in the sun, moor your boat directly at Amstelhaven for a quick bite to eat—burgers and sandwiches, salads and soups are all on the menu, which changes weekly—although, with such a lively atmosphere and music, it may not be so quick after all.

Roast Room

One half of this clearly carnivore-friendly establishment is the Roast Bar, a brasserie-style restaurant that features two kinds of views: the streets of Amsterdam out on the sunny terrace and the in-house butcher, where all the meat is freshly prepared, roasted and served. Visit with friends and share some boneless Iberico ribs or beef carpaccio, or be a little gluttonous with a juicy burger.

The café celebrates all that is Amsterdam by sourcing the wine, beer and baked goods on its menu from local producers; but even the tables are local, made with wood from trees on the Tweede van der Helststraat.
