Amsterdam is a wonderful city to pamper yourself in. Whether you would just like a quick workout, a whole day of relaxing treatments or even a few days of secluded pampering, Amsterdam offers a wide range of wellness and beauty centres. You’re bound to feel healthy and glowing at the end of your stay!
Many of Amsterdam’s upper-end hotels have impressive spa areas with a wide-range of beauty treatments available. For some you need to be a resident and at others you can attend as a day visitor. But this being Amsterdam, there are also some original places you can head to for some sublime relaxation
Amsterdam boasts a variety of saunas ranging from the luxurious Sauna Deco, which is styled with historic pieces from the Art Deco period, to a very affordable sauna run by volunteers within a squatter’s complex called Sauna Fenomeen. For massages, jacuzzi’s, rain showers and relax-zones all in one, choose one of Amsterdam’s excellent spa’s. Sento Spa sports a roof-terrace with panoramic views across the old city. Complete tranquility can be found at the glittering Spa Zuiver located in Amsterdam’s forest (Amsterdamse bos).
If submerging yourself in salty water at body temperature sounds heavenly to you then head to Koan Float. Or if that doesn’t quite float your boat there’s always swimming at De Mirandabad – complete with palm trees and a wave machine - or calm art deco-inspired paddling at the Zuiderbad. There are also some very eye-catching options 25 minutes outside of Amsterdam - the thermal baths at Ridderode are a treat, as is the hydromassage at the Spaarnwoude Resort.
This might sound a bit fishy, but Amsterdam’s Dr. Fish is the newest trend in Wellness treatments. The feeling of fish nibbling at your hands and feet may feel a little strange in the beginning, but very soon you’ll find out just how relaxing it is. Besides having very clean skin, your hands and feet will feel very soft afterwards. And to round off the pampering, you are served a delightful glass of bubbly in the lounge afterwards. They also offer facials, body massages or manicures.
A quick grooming does wonders! And this doesn’t only apply to the girls. S.Y.U. is a grooming salon especially for men. Not only can a man have a haircut and shave here but facials and hair dying are also possible. Or how about having something easy on the eye to look at whilst getting a chop? Galerie de Salon in the Nine Streets (‘negen straatjes’) is a barber shop simultaneously functioning as an art gallery!
Amsterdam spas and sauna’’ s can be a bit of an eye-opener for some visitors. Most of them have a no-clothes policy and many are mixed. If you feel a little uncomfortable about this ask about “bathing suit day” or if they have special “ladies only” times.
