Amsterdam’s Hortus Botanicus is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. The Tropenmuseum will be presenting a unique impression of Vodou, the colourful popular religion of Haiti, in its winter exhibition. The Dutch Resistance Museum is organising an exhibition under the heading PROTESTEER! (PROTEST!) - a survey of different forms of protest over the years. Foam_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, is the place to be to learn all about the many different aspects of photography. Works of Jacob Backer, one of the most successful Dutch painters of the 17th century, will this winter be on show at The Rembrandt House Museum. In the City Archive, you can step into the world of Christiaan Andriessen.
Museum of Bags and Purses is devoting an exhibition to Hester van Eeghen. At the Jewish Historical Museum you will be able to admire portraits and series of socially committed photos by the photographer Bert Nienhuis. The Bijzondere Collecties (Special Collections) of the University of Amsterdam will have the Atlas Maior on show. And the exhibition Heilig Vuur (Holy inspiration) in the New Church will show how diverse the religious experiences of modern artists have been, and still are today. If you are more interested in science and technology, head for science center NEMO. Lovers of maritime history will really enjoy a visit to the VOC (Dutch East Indies Company) Ship that is moored right next to NEMO. Or visit a unique part of Amsterdam’s city centre where nature, culture, history and science go hand in hand: fourteen institutions in the old Plantagebuurt together make up the cultural area known as Plantage aan het Water.
