Sunny Amsterdam

Vondelpark

Amsterdam is known for its world-class museums and art galleries, fabulous quirky shopping and all kinds of entertaining delights, but on a bright sunny day the best place to be is outside! Here we tell you how to experience Amsterdam and go home with a healthy tan! Sunglasses on – let’s go!

Sun, sea and fun in Amsterdam

Beach near Amsterdam

Going to the beach might not have been your first thought when packing for your trip to Amsterdam. But if you’re wise, you’ll have brought your water wings, Frisbee and sun hat. Amsterdam has some great urban beaches within the city limits, and other long white sandy beaches outside the city are easily reached within 45 minutes. And if you’re not too keen on the feeling of sand between your toes, then Amsterdam’s parks and gardens are other superb hot spots to lounge like a lizard in the sun.

Outdoors with the young ones

Melkhuis Vondelpark

The children’s playground at the Groot Melkhuis in the Vondelpark is extremely popular with the under-five’s and their parents. The children can swing, climb and slide, dig in the sand and everyone can have a drink and snack from the self-service tea house. Also very popular – especially with Amsterdam’s expats – is the charming playground where the Herengracht flows into the Brouwersgracht in the heart of the Jordaan. Perhaps the most unusual spot is the roof terrace on Nemo – which even a beach for the little ones!

Hit the roof

Roof terrace Nemo

In a city where real-estate is at a premium, every inch is put to good use. Amsterdam’s city roofs often conceal fantastic roof terraces – where you not only get to worship the sun, but get a great view too! One of the best is the roof terrace of Amsterdam’s Public Library – where you can also have something to eat and drink – and of course there’s always something on hand to read! Other favourites are Werck –close to the Anne Frank House – and the terrace at De Bijenkorf department store.

Rose-tinted glasses

Terrace Vondelpark

A glass of rose-wine is the favourite drink of many Amsterdammers when the sun is out. Find a good sundowner spot by strolling down the Haarlemmerstraat, through the Jordaan or along the canals, where there are plenty of al fresco café’s and bars. A spectacular option is the terrace of the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ – where you can watch the comings and goings on the river as the sun sets on the city. The Film Museum’s terrace in the Vondelpark is also amusing as people jog, cycle and rollerblade by.

Amsterdam is a great place to soak up some rays, so go on – get out!
