On reflection in Amsterdam’s Spiegelkwartier

Spiegelstraat

An absolute must for lovers of arts, antiques and curiosities is Amsterdam’s Spiegelkwartier (Mirror Quarter). This area has been the heart of the Dutch art and antiques trade for over eighty years. Exploring the historic Spiegelkwartier is easily combined with a visit to the Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the Allard Pierson museum - all within walking distance.

Galleries Galore

Toth Ikonen

In the Spiegelgracht over seventy specialised dealers offer a wide variety of artefacts, ranging from archaeological finds to 17th century furniture, glass and Dutch Delftware and from ancient art to Art Nouveau. Tóth Ikonen is the oldest religious icon gallery in Amsterdam, specializing in antique Russian icons on wooden panels from the 16th to the19th century and brass travelling icons. More ancient treasures are to be found at Archea Ancient Art, which has authentic objects from ancient Greek, Egyptian and Roman civilizations, as well as from the Near East.

Modern Masterpieces

Galerie Lieve Hemel

From the ancient to the modern. If you are looking for a very special piece, then Galerie Lieve Hemel is an inspired choice. This gallery features the best of contemporary Dutch Realism in magnificent paintings and gorgeous modern silver. Looking for a Warhol, Chagall or Karel Appel? Then Gallery Delaive is where you need to be. For over 30 years Delaive has specialized in Modern and Contemporary Art, from renowned Dutch and international artists. Gallery Delaive is also the exclusive representative of the Sam Francis Estate for Europe.

Art of Food

Art and food go hand-in-hand, and you’ll find plenty of choice in the Spiegelkwartier. Restaurant Spelt offers fresh seasonal food with a Dutch touch and has a continuously changing exhibition of big art photographs. Pasta e Basta serves excellent Italian food in over-the-top theatrical décor, but what really makes this a special location are the waiters and waitresses – who sing for your supper! Beautiful arias, a pop song or a fragment of a musical are all on the menu here. This makes for a very memorable evening out.

Explore by canal or bike

Mikes Bike Tours

A fun way of getting to the Spiegelkwartier is by Canal Bus (stop Rijksmuseum). And of course another very Dutch experience is to explore Amsterdam by bicycle. Mike's Bike Tours is conveniently located in the Kerkstraat, and you can hire a bike to pedal along the numerous points of interest on your own or take one of Mike’s fun, laid-back tours to help you develop a great sense of orientation - with loads of insider tips and info.

Whether on foot, by bike or by canal bus, Amsterdam’s Spiegelkwartier deserves more than a lingering look!
