Top 10 spots for green eating in Amsterdam

Noordermarkt, by Marloes den Hoed

If you’re looking for green, sustainable, organic eating (or drinking) that’s also delicious and innovative, then Amsterdam is the place to be! The fertile land surrounding Amsterdam combined with the Dutch expertise in farming has created a long tradition of local and organic produce. From world-class dining to a quick snack or tasty brew, Amsterdam offers organic delicacies for every budget. Here’s a selection of our top 10 picks for organic food and drinks (in no particular order):

Amsterdam’s organic food & drinks top 10

1) The Noordermarkt is the first thing that comes to mind when discussing organic food in Amsterdam. Every Saturday, an organic market takes over the square in the Jordaan, featuring everything from bread and cheese to homemade sausages and locally-grown veggies. (If you’re not in the Jordaan neighbourhood, there is also a smaller organic market every Saturday on the Nieuwmarkt.)

2) Head over to Restaurant de Kas in the Watergraafsmeer district of Amsterdam for a very special dining experience. De Kas offers world-class cuisine in an inspiring location and focuses on fresh produce prepared with a refined touch. Much of what ends up on the plate comes from their own greenhouse.

3) To many, Brouwerij ‘t IJ (The IJ Brewery) produces the most delicious beer in Amsterdam. Housed in a windmill, the brewery offers a nice variety of speciality beers. The fact that all the beers are organic is just one more reason to reward yourself with a cold bubbly beverage.

4) Hemelse Modder prepares pure, honest and utterly delicious food. The menu changes occasionally to keep the focus on seasonal ingredients. Their name comes from the dessert Hemelse Modder, a “heavenly mud” of chocolate mousse.

5) If you need a quick, healthy and tasty lunch, stop at one of the four locations of the Vlaamsch Broodhuys in Amsterdam. Their fresh sourdough loafs can be enjoyed on their own or turned into a sandwich with a selection of delectable meats and cheeses.

6) Located in the Pijp near the Albert Cuyp market, the Witte Uyl uses the market as its inspiration for fresh eating. Whether you’re a vegetarian or delight in a well-prepared roast, this restaurant turns out impressive sustainable dinners.

7) For something a bit stronger, stop by Proeflokaal de Admiraal on the Herengracht. Here you can taste unique liqueurs and the famous Dutch jenever, all prepared using age-old recipes and primarily organic ingredients. The interior décor with old distillery casks adds to the atmosphere.

8) You’ll find Restaurant As hidden near one of Amsterdam’s business districts, but don’t let the location put you off! Sustainable food is beautifully prepared and served family-style on long wooden tables in this homey restaurant.

9) Delicious Food is a small shop bursting with organic food on the Westerstraat. A variety of products are sold in bulk bins, and you can find specialty products from around the world. From gluten-free pasta and dried beans a rainbow of colours to Canadian maple syrup and decadent brownies, this is a great place to stock up on hard-to-find organic dry goods.

10) Follow your nose to the Kaaskamer (cheese room) in the Negen Straatjes (9 streets) shopping district. Their international and local cheese selection can’t be beat, and plenty of the products on offer are organic. If you don’t fancy stuffing cheese in your luggage, they’ll prepare a fresh baguette for you with the cheese of your choice.

This is just a small selection of the great places you can find organic food and drinks in Amsterdam. Come for a visit, and start exploring how delicious sustainable can be!
