Feeling Spanish

Spanish people in Amsterdam during World Cup Football 2010.

Tapas restaurants, nightlife, a passion for football and friendly locals - Amsterdam may be the capital of the Netherlands, but the city has a lot in common with Spanish culture and lifestyle. Find out here where the two cultures meet.

¿Habla español?

Detail of painting Van Gogh (Bedroom) at the Van Gogh Museum.

The key role that Spain played in shaping Dutch history is still reflected in Amsterdam’s cultural legacy today. You´ll find works by Spanish Masters like Murillo, Goya and Zurbarán among the Rijksmuseum´s extensive collections. In addition, works by Picasso are on display in the Van Gogh Museum until the end of May, as part of their “Picasso in Paris: 1900 – 1907” exhibition.  Looking to brush up on your neglected Spanish? You´ll find a great selection of Spanish books, from best-sellers to literary classics at CLC Books & Music.

Mmmm...tapas

Loco por fútbol!

Nightlife

Paradiso

The Spanish have a passion for nightlife and you´ll find plenty of Spanish-inspired pubs and clubs in Ámsterdam. Leidseplein square is always a great starting point for a good night out. For Latin or World Music, check nearby clubs Melkweg or Paradiso. If you prefer the more intimate, passionate atmosphere of Flamenco song and dance, don't miss Café Duende and Café Dos - two places full of art and magic.
