Delicious cuisine, cutting-edge fashion, romantic bridges softly illuminated at night, bijoux boutiques and some of the world’s best art galleries. You’d be forgiven for thinking you were in Paris, but actually a visit to Amsterdam will leave you saying ooh la la! Here’s how to experience the finest France has to offer in the Dutch capital.
France has had significant ties with Amsterdam for centuries. Napoleon’s brother was installed as king of the Netherlands in the early 19th century and he’s to thank for turning the former city hall into today’s present Royal Palace. You might also be surprised to know that Dutch contains a number of French borrowings – portmonnaie (purse), trottoire (pavement) and pardon being a small selection. In addition, the roof of the Royal Theatre Carré's Amstel Foyer was designed by non other than Gustave Eiffel of Eiffel Tower fame!
Amsterdam can also rival Paris as a romantic capital. Just ask any couple strolling along the canals – especially at night when the illuminated bridges cast their enchanting spell. And if you've been pierced by Cupid's arrow, what better place to propose or get married than Amsterdam, the City of Diamonds. Let’s not forget Amsterdam was the first city to legalise same sex marriages. To celebrate, De Taart van mijn Tante is an haute patisserie that creates incredible cakes to celebrate a wedding or any other occasion!
Amsterdam is crammed with grand cafés, many with an Art Nouveau feel where you’ll definitely experience European coffee culture at its finest. What better place for a French-inspired café than the former Renault showroom? Café Restaurant Dauphine – named after a popular model of the French car - offers French Bistro classics in a very cool interior. If you’re feeling flush, then Ciel Bleu is the Amsterdam’s premiere French restaurant. Located on the 23rd floor of the Okura Hotel, the view is as impressive as the two Michelin stars! Bon appétit!
The Netherland’s has no fewer than seven fashion academies – and of course many fashionable creations are to be found in Amsterdam. For fresh, funky designs pay a visit to the Young Designers United store, where a dozen designers display their wares. Or shop for internationally renowned Dutch labels such as Marlies Dekkers, Viktor & Rolf and Mart Visser to name but a few. And when it comes to catwalks, Amsterdam International Fashion Week delivers plenty of couture every January and July, giving Paris a run for its money.
With fabulous fashion, delectable food and some of the world’s best art, you’ll leave Amsterdam saying ooh’la’la!
