Amsterdam is a bonafide breeding ground for cutting edge design. With the internationally renowned Gerrit Rietveld (art) Academy located here, the city is assured a continuing stream of artistic and design talents. It is no wonder then, that the city has grown into one of the most important design centres in Europe. This acquired status is maintained by organising a great number of special events. An annual high point is Dutch Design Double, in which a number of various activities take place. All items mentioned below are part of this overall event.
For the entire month of September, Amsterdam will be enveloped by design concepts and specialist design events, not only encouraging the design talents within the city, but attracting skilled artists and designers from around the world. Whether it has to do with industrial or graphic design, jewellery, photography or architecture, every design discipline is represented in innovative exhibitions and events. And the best part is that the activities are spread throughout the city, encouraging participation and attention from all walks of life.

This event is organised by the magazine Elle Wonen (Living) and takes place each year at a different location. This year, the Lloyd Hotel will undergo a complete metamorphosis. Hotel rooms will be taken over by various designers. At the same time, the hotel will be the starting point for a design route which stretches through the city, visiting the most interesting design addresses along the way.
The Home Fair will also be tying in with Dutch Design Double to present the latest developments for the home. In this case, the concept of ‘home’ is used in the broadest sense because this fair at the RAI will feature not only furnishings but also the latest in garden and kitchen trends.
Following Red Light Fashion in January 2008, 2009 is the first year that Red Light Design Amsterdam is organised. This event also takes place in the Wallen red light district, in between the ladies of the night.
