Spend longer than 5 minutes in Amsterdam and you’ll discover that the Dutch have a highly-developed sense of humour. Combined with a vibrant expat community and Amsterdam’s own quirkiness, and it’s no wonder Amsterdam has a thriving English-language comedy scene. Here are a few ideas for a funny night out.
There are some excellent comedy clubs in Amsterdam staging English-language comedy. Located at Leidseplein, the team at Boom Chicago mixes sharp writing, quick thinking and high production values to create hilarious contemporary shows, which are performed nightly. Just around the corner is the more low-key Comedy Café which often hosts international, stand-up comedians. easyLaughs present a hilarious evening of English improvisation comedy every Friday. The international cast has a mix of Dutch and English-speaking actors and the clash of cultures is very amusing - no two shows are the same.
Why not go on a comedy course during your visit to Amsterdam? easylaughs offers comedy improvisation courses in English for all experience levels. The classes are taught by talented improvisers and a performance is held at the end of the course in front of a real live audience. If you’re not sure if improvisation is really for you or if you only have a short stay, then drop-in improv workshops take place every Sunday afternoon from 12:00 to 14:00 for a nominal fee (pay at the workshop, no need to reserve).
Laugh your head off at the Amsterdam Comedy Festival held annually at the end of May. Over the course of two evenings, 40 stand-up comedians from all over the world perform on one of five stages at Amsterdam’s Melkweg. With one ticket giving you entry to all the shows, you can tickle your funny bone all evening long. From the beginning of July to mid-August, an all-star international line-up plays at the Toomler comedy club during the Comedytrain International Summer Festival.
Have a laugh during your visit to Amsterdam – enjoy an evening of comedy!
