With world-class performances, Amsterdam strikes all the right notes with classical music fans. Despite its relatively small geographical size, the city boasts 55 concert venues and theatres. You'll find everything from symphony orchestras and ensembles to chamber music and opera in inspiring venues of all sizes.
Amsterdam has featured prominently in the classical music scene for hundreds of years. In the 17th century, the city specialised in printing sheet music, attracting composers from all over Europe. The rise of the bourgeoisie in the 18th and 19th centuries led to a growth in both concert venues and the variety of entertainment available. This golden age of classical music culminated in the construction of the Concertgebouw (Concert Hall) and the establishment of its orchestra. Today, Amsterdam's grand historical concert halls are joined by contemporary settings like the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ to provide a backdrop for the city's classical performances.
The Concertgebouw is now one of the most frequently visited concert halls in the world. Its beautifully restored Grote Zaal (grand hall) is an unforgettable sight even without an orchestra playing in it. The resident Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest is famous for their Mahler and Bruckner interpretations. The Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest (Dutch Philharmonic Orchestra) also frequently performs at the Concertgebouw.
Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJis one of the latest additions to the city's music scene, worth a visit for the architecture alone. Located in Amsterdam’s former docklands, the view from the café over the river and city skyline is spectacular – particularly at sunset. The Muziekgebouw has an extremely varied repertoire, showcasing everything from classical, opera and jazz to modern world and electronic music .
In days gone by, chamber music was primarily played in the salons of the bourgeoisie. These days it’s more accessible and Amsterdam has a collection of quaint old concert halls specialising in chamber music. The Bethaniënklooster, Cristofori, Felix Meritis, Uilenburger Synagoge and Noorderkerk offer beautiful seasonal programmes. Recitals are also regularly held in the Kleine Zaal of the Concertgebouw and in the AGA-hall at the Beurs van Berlage.
Amsterdam is also home to internationally-acclaimed ensembles, including the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and the Orkest van de Achttiende Eeuw (the 18th Century Orchestra).
Amsterdam is a top location for opera lovers. The Nederlandse Opera, based at the Muziektheater, is regarded as one of the world’s leading opera companies. The Nederlandse Opera attracts renowned vocalists, directors and other theatre producers to the Dutch capital. Amsterdam also has several smaller companies dedicated to musical theatre. The Dutch Philharmonic Orchestra (Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest) usually accompanies De Nederlandse Opera.
When it comes to classical music, Amsterdam is an unparalleled festival city. The Holland Festival attracts international attention with its high-quality programmes. In August, the Uitmarkt kicks off Amsterdam's cultural season, with three full days of free concerts. The impressive Robeco Zomerconcerten (Summer Concerts) offer a line-up of classical, world music, pop and jazz concerts. If alfresco is your thing, don’t miss the unforgettable Prinsengrachtconcert as a finale to the Grachtenfestival (Canal Festival). There are few things better than savouring classical music performed on Amsterdam’s picturesque canals.
There might be no such thing as a free lunch, but free lunch concerts do exist! Every Tuesday from September to May, free lunch concerts take place at 12:30 in the Foyer of the Muziektheater. This auditorium is located in the Stadhuis (Town Hall). The concerts are performed by small groups consisting of members of the Nederlands Orkest , the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest , the Nederlands Kamerorkest and the Koor van de Nederlandse Opera.
